Christine Mapondera Talley is the author of Makanaka’s World, a picture book series designed to teach young children about our world cultures, geography, and language in a fun and engaging way. Christine was born in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, and now resides in Chicago with her husband and two children. Growing up bilingual and gives Christine a unique perspective to help children learn about the globe.
Her writing was initially inspired by her daughter, as she wrote stories for her in Shona, her native language. Today Christine writes stories that directly address the need for diverse books. She’s driven to write books for children that elevate and celebrate the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora.
Christine is also co-founder of KidLit Nation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help educate and provide opportunities for children’s writers and illustrators of color. Since its inception in July of 2017, KidLit Nation has sponsored sixteen scholarships to a SCBWI regional conference and now hosts a monthly webinar series.
